It's that time of year again, the
wind blows a little colder and the days get a little shorter. Here
are some suggestions for a safe heating season:
- Be sure to have your furnace checked by a professional. That
way your furnace is safe and is adjusted to maximum efficiency.
- If you plan to heat your house with wood this year; be sure to
have your flue inspected and cleaned, if needed. Be sure that your
wood stove is safe to operate. Check your gaskets and firebrick
also.
- Remember to change to batteries in your smoke detectors twice
a year! You should have smoke detectors on every floor of your
home.
Your smoke detectors should be tested weekly. Smoke Detectors
Save Lives!!
- Do you have a fire extinguisher? Now is an good time to give
your whole family an early Christmas gift. A five pound ABC rated
fire extinguisher is your best choice. Be sure to ask if the
extinguisher you're buying can be recharged.
- Do you have an escape plan? Have you talked with your family
about how they can get out of your house if there's a fire? Now is
the time to practice so that everyone knows what to do in an
emergency.
- If you're using space heaters to warm up the cold corners of a
room; remember to inspect the electrical cords and keep the heater
away from curtains, furniture and any other surface that could
catch fire.
- Do you have a carbon monoxide detector? This is another gift
that you should give your family. CO poisoning is a deadly, silent
killer. A properly operating CO detector can sound a warning and
save lives.
- Be sure to have your kerosene heaters inspected annually.
Replace the wick and igniter before the start of the heating
season. Make sure that your heater is functioning properly.
